Broken garage door spring repair

A loud bang from the garage, then a door that feels far heavier or only opens partway, usually means a spring has snapped.

Signs of a broken spring

  • A sudden loud bang, often when the door is closed
  • The door is very heavy to lift, or an electric motor strains or stops
  • A visible gap in a coiled spring, or a spring hanging loose
  • The door rises unevenly or drops quickly when you let go

What to do (and what not to do)

Springs counterbalance the full weight of the door and hold a lot of stored energy, even when broken. Checkatrade advises against DIY spring repairs because of the risk of injury. While you wait for a specialist:

  • Stop using the door, including any electric opener
  • Keep children, pets and cars away from it
  • Don't try to wind, release or remove springs or brackets
  • If the door is stuck open and your garage needs securing, say so in your enquiry so specialists know it's urgent

Types of spring

Up-and-over doors usually have tension springs at the sides or a pair of springs on the frame. Sectional doors normally use torsion springs on a shaft above the opening. Springs are generally replaced as a pair so the door stays balanced (No1 Garage Doors).

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace a garage door spring?

Checkatrade puts a spring repair at £50–£100 (average £75). No1 Garage Doors puts a pair of replacement springs at £150–£350 including VAT, with call-out fees of £40–£80 on top.

Can I still open my garage door with a broken spring?

It isn't advised. Without the spring, the door's full weight is unsupported and it can drop suddenly. Leave it where it is and get a specialist to look at it.

Should both springs be replaced?

Usually, yes. Springs are normally replaced as a pair so the door stays balanced, and the second spring is often close to failing too.
