Electric garage doors and conversions

You can often add a motor to the door you already have. If you can't, an electric roller or sectional door may be the better choice.

Converting an existing door to electric

A conversion adds a motor, a drive rail (or a tube motor for roller doors) and remote controls. Up-and-over and sectional doors in good condition can often be converted. Very old, heavy or poorly balanced doors may need repairs first, and some may not be suitable at all. A specialist will check the springs and balance before quoting.

Costwise puts adding an electric motor and remote at £250–£600. Roller doors are usually sold with the motor included.

Things to ask about

  • Safety features: obstacle detection or auto-reverse, and photocell sensors
  • Manual release: how to open the door during a power cut
  • Remote security: rolling-code remotes rather than fixed codes
  • Power supply: whether a socket is needed near the motor
  • Warranty: what's covered for the motor and the door, and for how long

Common questions

Can my existing garage door be made electric?

Often, yes. Many up-and-over and sectional doors in good condition can have a motor and remotes added. Costwise puts this at about £250–£600. A specialist will check the door's condition and balance first.

What happens in a power cut?

Electric doors normally have a manual release or override. Ask your installer to show you how it works.

Do I need a socket in the garage?

Most motors need a power supply near the motor. Ask your installer whether one is included or needs an electrician.
