Electric garage door repairs
If your electric garage door won't open, stops partway or reverses, the cause is usually the remote, the safety sensors, the power supply or the motor, or a mechanical fault the motor can't overcome.

Common electric faults
| Symptom | Likely causes |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens with the remote | Flat remote battery, remote needs re-pairing, no power to the motor |
| Door reverses or won't close | Sensors blocked, dirty or misaligned, or limits need setting |
| Motor hums, door doesn't move | Broken spring or cable, seized door, or a failed motor or gear |
| Works from the wall button only | Remote or receiver fault |
Check the springs first
A motor only moves a balanced door. If a spring or cable has failed, the motor may strain, stop or burn out. Don't keep pressing the remote. Use the manual release only if the springs and cables look intact, and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Repair or replace the motor?
Remotes and sensors are often cheap to fix. If the motor is old and parts are no longer made, it may be worth asking for a price for a new motor alongside the repair. Checkatrade puts wiring repairs on electric doors at around £150–£300.

Common questions
Why won't my electric garage door open with the remote?
Common causes are a flat remote battery, a remote that has lost its pairing, no power to the motor, or a fault in the receiver. Try the wall button if you have one.
Why does my electric garage door go back up when closing?
Usually the safety sensors are blocked, dirty or misaligned, or the force or limit settings need adjusting.
Can a specialist repair any make of motor?
Many can, but parts for older or less common motors can be hard to find. Mention the make and model in your enquiry if you know it.
