Garage door questions answered
How much does a garage door repair cost?
Checkatrade puts a typical garage door repair at £40 to £120, with an average of about £80, and a spring repair at around £75. Replacing a pair of springs is often £150 to £350 plus a call-out fee. Your price depends on the fault, the parts needed and how urgent the job is.
Can I replace a broken garage door spring myself?
It isn't advised. Garage door springs hold a lot of tension and can cause serious injury if they're released incorrectly, and Checkatrade warns against DIY spring repairs. If a spring has snapped, stop using the door, keep people and cars clear, and ask a specialist to replace the springs, normally as a pair.
Can my existing garage door be made electric?
Often, yes. Many up-and-over and sectional doors in good condition can have a motor and remotes added. Costwise puts this at about £250 to £600. Doors that are very old, heavy or badly balanced may need repairs first or may not be suitable. A specialist will check this before quoting.
Which is better, a sectional or a roller garage door?
Both open vertically, so you can park close to the door. Sectional doors usually offer stronger insulation and a more substantial panel, while roller doors need very little headroom and suit garages with limited ceiling space. Price ranges overlap, so the best choice depends on your garage's size, headroom and how you use it.
Is an insulated garage door worth it?
An insulated door makes most sense if your garage is integral or attached to the house, or used as a gym, workshop or utility room. For a detached garage used only for storage, the benefit is smaller. Ask specialists for the U-value of each door they quote so you can compare like for like.
Are you a garage door company?
No. This website is an enquiry service run by Doppio Digital. We don't supply, fit or repair garage doors. With your consent, we pass your enquiry to up to 2 independent local garage door specialists. They contact you directly, quote and carry out any work you agree to.
Does it cost anything to use this service?
No. Sending an enquiry is free and you're under no obligation to accept any quote. The specialists we work with may pay us for introductions, which is how the website is funded. You'll only pay for the work you agree with the specialist you choose, at the price they quote you.
Which areas do you cover?
We take enquiries from Salisbury, Amesbury, Andover and Wilton, and from many nearby villages, on the Wiltshire–Hampshire border. Specialists only receive enquiries from postcodes they cover. If you're unsure, enter your postcode in the form and we'll let you know whether a local specialist can help.
Do I need planning permission for a new garage door?
Replacing a garage door usually doesn't need planning permission. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, such as parts of central Salisbury or Wilton, check with Wiltshire Council or Test Valley Borough Council before changing the door's appearance or materials. Your specialist can advise you on suitable styles.
Which garage door brands can I choose from?
Garador and Hörmann are two of the best-known brands in the UK. Both sell through independent dealers rather than direct to homeowners, and other makes are available too. When you compare quotes, ask for the exact brand and model, the warranty, and whether the installer is an authorised dealer.
