New garage doors: types and brands

The right door depends on your driveway, headroom, how you use the garage and your budget.

Up-and-over doors

A single panel that tilts up and out. They're usually the cheapest choice: Costwise puts them at £600–£1,000 fitted. You'll need some driveway space in front, because the bottom of the door swings outwards as it opens.

Sectional doors

Horizontal panels that lift vertically and run back under the ceiling, so you can park right up to the door. Many are insulated. They typically cost £1,200–£2,500 fitted (Costwise).

Roller doors

Slats that roll into a box above the opening. They take up very little space inside or out, which makes them useful where headroom or the driveway is short. Typically £900–£1,800 (Costwise).

Side-hinged doors

A pair of doors that open like gates. They suit garages used as workshops and traditional-looking properties.

Insulated doors

An insulated door, usually sectional or insulated roller, makes most sense for integral or attached garages, or garages used as a gym, workshop or utility space. Ask specialists for the door's thermal performance (U-value) so you can compare quotes like for like.

Brands you'll come across

Garador (a UK manufacturer) and Hörmann (a German manufacturer) are two of the best-known brands, and both sell through independent dealers rather than direct. We have no relationship with either brand. When you compare quotes, ask for the exact brand and model, the warranty, and whether the installer is an authorised dealer.

Planning

Replacing a garage door usually doesn't need planning permission. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, such as parts of central Salisbury or Wilton, check with Wiltshire Council or Test Valley Borough Council before changing the look of the door.
